Kudos to you, Kim DeGiulio, for the publication of your article, “Ford aims to boost hiring of employees with autism” (October 15, 2020). The “Ford Works Program” is an inspiring program that directly addresses the reality facing many individuals with autism; it is often exceedingly difficult to find employment. In fact, when compared to their peers with other types of disabilities, young adults with autism have the lowest rate of employment. It was so encouraging to hear the authentic appreciation that an employer such as Ford Motor Company has for these employees, as they recognize the skills that those on the spectrum bring to the table.
Many job applicants with autism have been involved in intensive job skills training programs while attending school in order to help with their successful transition into adult life. Research has shown that participation in such programs increases the likelihood of meaningful employment into adulthood. It is outstanding to hear that Ford Motor Company has launched a similar model by partnering with the Autism Alliance of Michigan. By preparing candidates for each step of the employment process through training, accommodations, on-the-job support, and continuous monitoring, individuals with autism hired at Ford Motor Company are being set up for success.
In addition, thank you for sharing the success of Nick Howard, a Ford employee with autism. Reading about the first-hand experience he had going through the employment process to obtain a job he is comfortable with is heartwarming. What makes it even better, is Ford valuing him as an individual and utilizing his skill sets as an employee. We hope more companies follow in the footsteps of Ford Motor Company!
Thank you,
