Dear Ms. McGorry,
Thank you for highlighting the use of improv-based approaches to support autistic individuals in your article titled,“Unique therapy helps some young people with autism interact better with others”. At ASAT, we seek to promote evidence-based treatment and highlight efforts made to support autistic individuals and their families. We appreciate your efforts to share information about a unique approach that create inclusive opportunities for autistic individuals that enhance their social and communication skills within a supportive and engaging group environment.
According to the article, improv provides opportunities such as voluntary participation, group interaction, and a space to practice nonverbal communication within a supportive environment. Although we acknowledge that improv may provide the experiences mentioned above, it is important to note that there is currently limited research supporting its use as an evidence-based intervention for autism. Practices and activities included in improv, however, may complement existing evidenced-based interventions for autistic individuals, specifically in the areas mentioned previously. Additionally, it is essential to also note that this experience may not be suitable for all autistic individuals, particularly those who may lack the prerequisite skills needed to participate fully and meaningfully.
We appreciate your effort to bring attention to improv-based approaches that celebrate creativity and provide opportunities for inclusion and social connection for individuals with autism. At the same time, we urge caution in how such approaches are presented or interpreted. While these experiences can be meaningful and enriching, it is important not to overstate their therapeutic impact or position them as a substitute for interventions that are supported by a strong evidence base. For more information about evidence-based practices in autism treatment, we encourage readers to visit the Association for Science in Autism Treatment’s website at www.asatonline.org.
