Dear Mr. Augenstein:
Thank you for your story, “Apple iPad, iPod Touch Might Help People with Autism Take Steps toward Independence” (January 3, 2011). I want to commend you for balancing the potential utility of this technology to promote independence, while exercising caution that it is not a “magic bullet.”
Equally important is your honesty that researchers have not yet experimentally evaluated the efficacy of the iPad or iPod Touch used in the manner you described. The tone of your article was one of enthusiastic hope that this technology may improve the quality of life for individuals with autism—a hope many share.
Sincere regards,
Florence D. DiGennaro Reed, Ph.D., BCBA-D
Board Member, Association for Science in Autism Treatment
