Unlike traditional assessments that primarily focus on students’ skills or behavior, the SEAT evaluates both students and their surrounding environment. This approach facilitates the identification of mismatches between environmental demands and the student’s current abilities. As part of an ecological assessment, the SEAT systematically collects information on student interactions with the learning environment, including demands, conditions, supports, and barriers that may influence participation and achievement. The SEAT is used by behavior analysts, educators, and related professionals to identify environmental variables that affect behavior and performance, rather than assuming a skill deficit or lack of motivation. This assessment can be used with students in Kindergarten through 12th grade (K–12); however, it is specifically designed to support students with autism and other neurodevelopmental differences.

The results of this assessment can inform priority areas for intervention, identify skills requiring development, highlight environmental supports or barriers, guide the creation of individualized treatment goals, facilitate progress monitoring, and provide recommendations for optimizing the learning environment. Overview of SEAT Components

The SEAT includes several forms and data sheets that guide educators through the ecological assessment process. The five forms are the Referral Information Form, Records Review Form, Ecological Assessment Completion Checklist, Setting and Student Skill Inventory, and Setting and Student Skill Comparison. Together, these forms help the assessor organize referral information, review relevant records, track completion of the assessment process, identify the demands of the setting and the student’s current skills, and compare those skills with the environment’s expectations.

The SEAT also incorporates three data sheets: On-Task Behavior and Instructional Formats, Topography of Presentation-Prompts and Responding Expectations, and the Ecological Assessment Class Survey. These instruments enable educators to collect detailed information regarding student participation, instructional conditions, expectations, and classroom characteristics. Utilizing these forms collectively allows for systematic data collection and organization, supporting the identification of barriers, supports, and areas for environmental modification.

Conducting the SEAT: Procedures

Phase 1: Data Gathering – The gathering phase of the SEAT consists of five important tasks that help the assessor collect information about both the student and the learning environment:

      1. Referral and Record Review – Review the reason for the assessment and relevant records to better understand the student’s history, current needs, and areas of concern.
      2. Observe the Setting – Observe the learning environment to identify its expectations, routines, activities, and other factors that may affect the student’s participation.
      3. Observe the Student – Observe the student in their natural environment to understand how they respond to activities, expectations, and different environmental requirements.
      4. Structured Interviews – Gather information from people who know the student and the learning environment, such as teachers and other members of the educational team.
      5. Collect Samples – Gather relevant examples of the student’s work or other materials that provide additional information about their skills and performance.

Together, these five tasks provide a more complete picture of the student, the environment, and their interaction.

Phase 2: Reporting – The reporting phase is where the information collected during the data-gathering phase is organized, summarized, and analyzed. This phase helps the assessor bring together information about the student and the setting to better understand the relationship between the student’s current skills and environmental demands. The reporting phase includes five tasks:

      1. Summarize Data Collection – Organize and summarize the information gathered during the assessment.
      2. Finalize Student and Setting Information – Complete the information collected on the student’s skills and the setting’s characteristics and demands.
      3. Complete the Setting and Student Skill Comparison – Compare what the environment requires with the student’s current skills to determine areas where there may be a mismatch.
      4. Analyze Strengths and Weaknesses – Review the results to identify the student’s strengths, areas of need, and environmental factors that may support or hinder success.
      5. Write the Report – Combine the findings into a clear report that summarizes the assessment results and provides recommendations to help support the student’s participation and success.

Utility and Application for Educators

Ecological assessments are as valuable as functional assessments, though they serve distinct purposes (Hardin, 1978). While functional assessments focus on analyzing specific behaviors and their influencing variables, ecological assessments observe the student within the learning environment. Assessors may select an ecological assessment to gain insight into the environmental supports necessary for student success. The SEAT assists educators in facilitating smoother transitions, identifying and reducing environmental barriers, determining which skills the environment reinforces, and implementing changes to optimize student outcomes. Additionally, the SEAT enables differentiation between skill deficits and motivational issues, the active identification of environmental constraints, and the comparison of student performance with typical peer expectations. Rather than concentrating solely on modifying the student, the SEAT encourages consideration of environmental adjustments, such as classroom arrangement, noise levels, peer interactions, teacher pacing, and teacher positioning, to enhance learning and participation.

The SEAT provides instructors with a flexible assessment tool that aligns with ABA principles and offers a structured way to examine the relationship between the student and their learning environment. It is completed in two main phases: the data-gathering phase and the reporting phase. During the data-gathering phase, the assessor collects information about the student and their environment through a referral and record review, observations of the setting and student, structured interviews, and the collection of relevant samples. During the reporting phase, this information is organized, summarized, and analyzed to compare the demands of the setting with the student’s current skills, identify strengths and weaknesses, and develop meaningful recommendations. Educators can use this information to make practical adjustments to the environment, provide appropriate supports, address barriers before they become more significant, and create conditions that better promote the student’s participation, learning, and success.

Due to the comprehensive nature of the process, which involves data collection across multiple settings and activities, observations, interviews, and data analysis, the SEAT typically cannot be completed within a single day or week. Another consideration we can take into account while conducting the assessment is the potential for overgeneralization based on the observation period and classroom dynamics, since they can change constantly due to school dynamics. To address this drawback, the SEAT includes a Comments section within the Summary of Observations and Notes where the assessor can document any factors that may have affected the observation or assessment results. This includes instructional, environmental, or logistical circumstances, such as changes in the typical schedule, independent versus teacher-led instruction, substitute teachers, staffing changes, fire drills, interruptions, or other unusual events. The assessor may also note whether the observation appeared representative of the student’s typical classroom experience.

The SEAT enables educators to discern whether challenges stem from skill deficits, motivational factors, contextual demands, or a combination of these. It also facilitates the identification of student strengths, comparison of skills with environmental expectations, proactive management of environmental constraints, and the development of targeted recommendations for the student’s daily learning context. In summary, the time invested in the SEAT process can yield meaningful, detailed information often unattainable through single observations or traditional assessments.
